Preparing to Prepare – Documenting Your Exercise

Exercising your plans is an integral part of an organization’s resiliency strategy. You may know why you need to exercise your plans but knowing how to plan and prepare all the documents for a Business Continuity exercise is fundamental to a successful exercise. Gartner says that the prep work for an exercise is approximately 60% of an Exercise – so what are you prepping? This session will review designing exercise documentation for use pre, post, and during a Table-top exercise. Attendees will be provided with a handout that gives guidance on exercise documentation and the opportunity to apply the guidance to their own exercise.

The “Non-Standard BIA”

Faced with a client that had the results of a BIA that took two years to complete, cost $400,000, did not provide the necessary information to develop recovery plans, and where much of this information was outdated, the presenter developed a combined BIA/Risk Assessment. This allowed the rapid collection of the information necessary to develop recovery plans. It was much easier (and much faster) to get to the necessary decisions with this approach. It also provided the information necessary to complete both business unit and technology recovery plans. This approach has been used multiple times now; it is both effective and efficient. This presentation will describe how this methodology works and why it is effective.

Leveraging Your BCM Program in Cyber Security Incident Response

The immediate reaction to a cyber-security incident is the FUD factor (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt); more like ‘chickens running around with their head cut off’. In the event of a data breach the RTO goes ‘out of the window’ and response is based on RTO=0. An agile response requires tested and documented Incident Response Plans – including Crisis Management, Business Continuity, and IT Disaster Recovery Plans. Automating the workflow facilitates seamless collaboration and the ability to Monitor, Measure & Manage the activities that are critical to effective Incident Response. In this presentation, learn about the various program components that will help in building an effective Incident Response.

But even worse is the ‘doomsday’ scenario where the hacker destroys or lock up that data, making it impossible to retrieve. To guard against that kind of panic, the financial services industry has created Sheltered Harbor, a voluntary initiative that provides financial institutions and their customers with an extra layer of protection. This session will explore the scope of the Sheltered Harbor initiative, industry adoption and key components of the solution.
