How do you avoid being complacent in your role?
I am so enthusiastic about our Resilience profession there is no way to be complacent! There is so much to be done! Globally, we are a growing group of professionals who are forging the way and helping to clarify our terminology for those that follow.
What is the biggest risk that you’ve taken?
Giving up my comfortable lifestyle in Southern Africa, to move blindly to the United States for my husband’s job (with a toddler and 9 month old son in tow!). Having never set foot in any one of the 50 states, this was daunting. However the risk paid off, and both the US and the people that live here, have been amazing to me.
What impresses you the most when you are considering hiring someone?
Their savvy questions! I have been inspired by the confidence and knowledge of students coming out of their Emergency Management degrees. Many know exactly where they are going and have developed the skills to get them there.
What is the biggest challenge to achieving that success?
One of the biggest challenges women and other diverse groups have faced in the resilience profession, has been the lack of opportunity to have a ‘voice’. To share their knowledge, experience and insights. Fortunately in recent years, there has been a huge shift in this arena and there are many inspiring leaders helping us on this journey!
