What Makes an Emergency Manager Effective? – Part 2

The nine common characteristics of effective, successful emergency managers are technical and substantive knowledge, professionalism, interpersonal relations, management, leadership, legal and ethical behavior, problem solving, communication, and cultural and environmental awareness.

Emergency management consultant Lucien Canton, CEM, recently reviewed these skills and core competencies. In part two of his analysis, he debates the merits of seven additional characteristics proposed by researchers Jenna Tyler and Abdul-Akeem Sadiq in their paper, The Essential Skill Set of a Resilient Emergency Management, that was recently published in the Journal of Emergency Management.
