Real-world sessions and workshops have been scheduled for the featured Case Studies track at the 2020 Continuity Insights Management Conference. The exchange of practical ideas that can help solve critical problems or improve the efficiency or effectiveness of an overall BCM program will be on full display as practitioners share information dealing with current issues based on actual events.
Featured case studies will focus on best practices for resilience, the role of cybersecurity in BC, “tales from the real world” situational challenges, advancing your active shooter response program, emergency management and social media, the future of recovery, and more.
Presenters will include expert business continuity practitioners from Verizon Wireless, RGA Insurance, Raytheon, the Resiliency Institute. T. Rowe Price, Southern Glazers Wine and Spirits, Income Research + Management, and more. The complete Case Studies track session line-up includes:
The Hong Kong Crisis: Into the Unknown
Mike Keating, RGA Reinsurance
How do you manage a crisis everyone sees, but perhaps does not understand? The Hong Kong protests beginning in the summer of 2019 received headlines and worldwide attention, but little consensus about its magnitude, impact, how it should be best managed. This lack of shared understanding of a crisis can either splinter a senior leadership team or unite them through a humble appreciation of what they must learn together. This session will share the story of how one company processed the information available and responded through a variety of resources to successfully manage the chaos.
Tales from the Real World
Mark Carroll, Income Research + Management
In this session approximately 10 individuals, collectively with more than 200 years of BCDR experience, will be assembled to present their unique challenge or mini-case that they have experienced that is outside of the business continuity norm; something that you can’t address from a textbook of best practices. A cadre of experts will each relay an example of a method, practice, use-case, etc. that they have used or plan to use.
From Terrorism to Twitter and Beyond: The New Era of Emergency Management
Suzanne Bernier, SB Crisis Consulting
With so many varied and emerging threats we must continue to focus on and plan for, including terrorism, domestic terrorism, cybersecurity, active intruder incidents, and infectious diseases, the evolution of social media in disasters, and the ever-increasing importance of effective crisis communications both before, during, and after any emergency situation is critical. The learning objectives will cover: 1) The new threats must we plan for, perhaps many of which didn’t exist 15-20 years ago; 2) Understanding the evolution of social media in disasters, and how to harness the power of social media before, during, and after a disaster; 3) Reviewing your existing plans and providing tips on what to include to ensure they are properly prepared for these new and emerging risks.
Aligning Business Continuity Management and Supplier Risk Management Programs
Dave Prosser, Verizon Wireless
Supplier Risk Management (SRM) has become a critical risk management function monitored globally at the highest levels of leadership. Many organizations entrust their core products and services to suppliers (aka third parties or vendors), thereby relying upon the suppliers’ processes and controls to carry-out these core products and services in a safe and secure manner. If suppliers lack strong processes and controls, the entrusting organizations can be exposed to operational, regulatory, financial, and (many times even more concerning) reputational risk. With natural and man-made disasters, civil unrest, cyber-attacks, and data breaches becoming more frequent, Business Continuity Management (BCM) has become an integral part of a robust SRM Program. This session will present an overview of how Verizon’s BCM team works with and supports the SRM program.
Practical Steps to Advance Your Active Shooter Response Exercise Program
David Trout, Raytheon
In this session practical steps will be shared on how Raytheon built its exercise program around this growing threat and advanced it to conducting full scale active shooter exercises at multiple sites safely and securely. It will also demonstrate how leadership support was achieved and buy-in and trust secured from the highest levels to make exercises like these mandatory at every site. It will also include a deep dive into the exercise team’s planning process that has enabled all of the drills to be carried out safely, securely, and used as a template to plan and conduct these complex drills. You will walk away with invaluable knowledge to build on education and training around this topic no matter what level you’re at using real and practical steps that can be easily implemented.
Changing Consumer Preferences Means Changing Operational Models
Cyrus Green, T. Rowe Price
T. Rowe Price (TRP) has experienced a growing client preference to engage online or by mobile phone. This led to the decision for TRP to close one of three operational sites, which would impact manageable risk: Operational, Business Continuity, Incident Response, and Vendor. As TRP traditionally relies on three sites to manage contingency by shifting work to alternate sites, learn about its experience in adapting their recovery strategies when redundant operational resources are removed.
BusCon Meets CyberSec – A Match Made in Continuity Heaven
Franklin Fletcher and Doug Sievers, Southern Glazers Wine and Spirits
Attendees will discover the role that cybersecurity should have in a business continuity plan and how to create successful recovery strategies. This interactive session will address the role of business continuity and cybersecurity professionals – where and how do these roles converge in your organization? If they don’t converge at all, what are the ramifications? The discussion will focus on key perspectives and skill sets required for both roles – how a partnership between Business Continuity and Cybersecurity can help to better identify, recognize, analyze, and address risks related to your data and applications, and better achieve the objectives of your business continuity program. Learn how Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits created synergies between the two functions in planning and in support of its Corporate Crisis Management Center for all hazards.
