Top Continuity Threats Businesses Will Face in 2022, and What Businesses Can Do to Improve Their Chance of Surviving

From the BCI: A simple look at the state of business continuity suggests not enough firms are prepared for the challenges to their economic survival and resilience. According to the latest PWC Global Crisis Survey, as many as 95 percent of business leaders report that their crisis management capabilities need improvement. This article originally appeared on the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) website and is reprinted here with permission. And though the pandemic has spurred on business leaders seeking to build up their organizational resilience capabilities, the low level of crisis readiness (before COVID) has made that effort exceedingly difficult. Indeed, more than 30 percent of business leaders report that they did not have a designated core crisis response team when the pandemic first struck. Only 35 percent had a crisis response plan they deemed “very relevant.” Data also shows that organizations built up crisis management and business continuity muscle memory, thanks to the pandemic. Senior management, for one, has become more attuned to the importance of resilience, according to the Future of Business Continuity Report. But the threat landscape has only degraded, putting late adopters at a distinct disadvantage. What can they do? Getting staff to take business continuity and resilience seriously is one place to start. However, those abstract concepts only motivate staff if they fully understand the specific threats they face. Many of those threats are also becoming (more) interrelated, as they unfurl in bunches, compounding the individual effects of each. What are the key continuity threats to ... Read more

Risk Assessment: 3 Key Starting Points for Effective Business Impact Analysis

By Zerto: No venture is without risk. Assessing and managing risk and its potential impact on business is a critical role of business leaders. With the world becoming increasingly digital, IT departments must manage and mitigate more and more risk using both new technology and improved processes and practices. The varied risks to critical IT systems and data continue to evolve along with our political, economic, and environmental landscapes. A simple risk assessment definition identifies which risks your organization should prepare for. A business impact analysis then predicts the potential disruption from each type of risk to your continued ability to do business. I want to discuss the three key areas of risk from an IT perspective that all leaders should be assessing and managing in their business impact analysis plan. Unplanned Downtime In our current always-on business world, unplanned downtime impacts business not just in the form of lost revenue or lost productivity, but also in customer confidence and loss of reputation. Consumers have many options and may quickly switch to a competitor if your business is down, leading to a loss of new and longtime customers alike. The causes of unplanned downtime can range from natural disasters to a system administrator entering the wrong command to a cybercriminal exploiting a system vulnerability. The likelihood of any of these types of events happening to your business depends on many factors including your industry, your geographical location, and your preparedness, to name just a few.
