In this keynote, Jeff Schlegelmilch will explore the most critical threats facing the world today, detailing the dangers of pandemics, climate change, infrastructure collapse, cyberattacks, and nuclear conflict. Drawing on research from leading experts, he provides an accessible overview of the causes and potential effects of these looming megadisasters. This lively keynote session will address the need for incentive structures to be built into disaster business models and provide tools to help put these structures in place. These incentives encourage the private sector to act—for the benefits of their organizations and their stakeholders. It will cover coping with unmet expectations, community resilience, and questions your board of directors should be asking.

If a shutdown is inevitable in these conditions, what makes the role of a business continuity manager important if a negative outcome can’t be prevented? Ron Spence shares his observations about how the industry has evolved in the post 9/11 and post pandemic era. He will discuss the current state of the business continuity profession and share his predictions for where it’s headed. With tandem crises going on, disruption is normalized. People expect the next tornado to touch down, the next major cyberattack or civil disturbance to be announced, or to hear about a power outage that disrupted operations. Over the past several years, we’ve seen mass gatherings turn into civil unrest more and more across the world, including the latest protest activity occurring on U.S. college and university campuses across North America. This session will review case studies and lessons learned of deadly mass gatherings across North America and the globe, while sharing tips and insights from survivors to responders. Suzanne has met with survivors and families of civil unrest from across the globe after deadly mass gatherings, from parades to concerts to nightclubs, to document what went well, what didn’t go well, and recommendations on how countries, communities and organizations can better plan for, respond to, and recover from these types of deadly mass gatherings in the future.
